As we near the memorial service for Suzanne McClure, we would like to share a tribute for her commitment and dedication to growing our community. After working as a private business owner in Colorado for decades, Suzanne came to Goodland in 2014 with her husband Mike, at which time she took up the mantle as Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Sherman County Economic Development Director.
In her time, Suzanne worked on several major economic development projects in the Goodland area, most recently including an $8 million new Holiday Inn Express and a $5 million overhaul of the 24/7 Travel Store. She was an appointed member of the Sherman County Public Building Commission, which on April 28 successfully took a ballot initiative to Sherman County voters to fund a new $10 million skilled nursing facility.
In 2018, Suzanne established the Goodland Welcome Center, a tourism and hospitality facility located beneath the City’s biggest tourist attraction, the Van Gogh “Big Easel.” Suzanne moved her office to the Welcome Center and personally greeted hundreds of visitors until her retirement. As a member of the Topside Trail Committee, Suzanne helped to open a Dog Park in Goodland and add miles of new walking trail in the community.
Suzanne was not only interested in recruiting new businesses, but also fostering the entrepreneurial spirit within our local students. She annually worked with USD 352 staff and NetWork Kansas to hold Sherman County’s “Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge,” which gives Kansas students hands-on experience thinking entrepreneurially by developing new business ideas. In addition, she was a certified instructor of the Kansas Ice House Entrepreneurship Program and held classes through Northwest Tech to teach about business creation.
Suzanne has been an asset to this community and to our organization, and she will be greatly missed. The memorial service for Suzanne will be Saturday, August 1 at 10:30am at Goodland United Methodist Church.
It’s hard to forget someone who gave us so much to remember. ♥
